Paramilitary forces called to oversee Nandyal by election

The Election Commission has decided to move in paramilitary forces for the Nandyal by-election, in lieu of Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party's (YCP) request. YCP complained to the EC about its lack of confidence in the state police force. The EC responded positively and decided to call in central forces.

EC decided to involve paramilitary forces in every aspect of the election procedure and restrict state forces to regular duties. This maybe a shock to the ruling Telugu Desam (TDP) government. Every polling booth will only have central forces in command.

According to election rules, only the voter, candidate and primary agent of the candidate will be allowed in the polling booth. Apart from these - no one is allowed to enter the polling premises.

But this rule is often overruled as police forces often support the ruling government. The local Nandyal authorities have also been accused of acting according to TDP orders. The YCP lodged a complaint with the EC regarding this issue as the Nandyal by-election has become a prestigious one for both TDP and YCP.

Seven companies of paramilitary forces will reach Nandyal in another three days. They would be in charge of every polling booth which would automatically restrict the power of the ruling government. YCP leaders appreciate the decision of the EC while TDP is yet to respond.
