Nandyal polls to be held on August 23

The much-awaited Nandyal by-polls will be held on August 23, the Election Commission announced on Thursday.

With the announcement, the model code of conduct has now been imposed in the district. It means that "persons are barred by law from inducing electors to vote for or against a particular candidate. The government is also bound by these laws and as such, during the pendency of the elections and until its conclusion, no action can be taken either through government processes or through individual acts which may affect fair and independent conduct of the elections."

The EC will issue the elections notification by July 29. Now the last date for filing the nominations is August 5 and last date for withdrawal of nominations is August 9.

The polls will be held on August 23 and the results will be announced on August 28.

The Nandyal Assembly seat became vacant after the sitting MLA Bhuma Nagireddy died of a heart attack. Nagireddy was elected on Yuvajana Sramik Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) ticket in 2014 polls. He later defected and joined Telugu Desam Party (TDP).

TDP has fielded Bhuma's brother’s son Brahmananda Reddy, YCP has put Shilpa Mohan Reddy. For TDP and YSRCP, the Nandyal is a prestige issue.

The by-poll is crucial for TDP and its chief Chandrababu Naidu, as it would set the stage for the 2019 elections and the mood of the general public.
