Nandyal polls TDPs housing scheme hits unforeseen roadblock

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) that had announced a housing scheme in Nandyal – hoping to cash in on the popular sentiments – is facing an unforeseen setback.

Interestingly, the government is it finding hard to get any takers for its government scheme. The Housing scheme under the PM’s Awas Yojana (PMAY) Scheme was announced by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu to attract the voters of the Nandyal by-poll.

Under the Aawas Yojana, 13 thousand houses were allotted to every town, including Nandyal. But sadly, the government has not been able to find any takers. In fact, TDP was shocked to find that only 1100 applications were filed.

But allocating 13,000 houses, the TDP expected that it would be able to garner 40,000 votes from families. It turns out that when enquiries were made, the party found out that the public found the interest rates were too high under the housing scheme.

As per the guidelines under PMAY, the houses to be built in the Awas Yojana are of 3 types. Under LIG (Lower income group) G-1 classification, a house should be built in 645 square yards. The loan under this category is Rs 6 lakhs with Rs 2.67 lakhs subsidy.

MIG (Middle Income Group) -1 category house received a loan of Rs 9 lakhs and subsidy Rs 2.35 lakhs. And the MIG – 2 category houses get a loan of Rs 12 lakhs with Rs 2.3 lakhs subsidy.

But sadly, the general public in Nandyal found these interest rates too high and hence was least interested in the government project.
