CM Chandrababu Naidu had initiated the process of persuading backward classes and TD-affiliated BC associations not to oppose their inclusion of the Kapu community in the BC category.  The TDP-pro organisations may have an edge over other parties during the upcoming Nandyal elections. Kapu leaders are likely to push for political reservations gradually.

In a political move, the AP Government has agreed in-principle to provide reservations in education and employment for the Kapu community. Earlier chief minister Chandrababu Naidu had initiated the process of persuading backward classes and TD-affiliated BC associations not to oppose their inclusion of the Kapu community in the BC category. BC welfare minister K. Atchennaidu was also involved in convincing the community members regarding the stance.

Amid speculations that this was a political move to obtain an edge over the other parties during the August 23 Nandyal elections, the pro-TD organisations of Kapu community have been directed to gather together in Vijayawada for a meeting that will be addressed by the Chief Minister.

Inside sources further said that Naidu promised not to touch the political reservations except for employment and education reservations for the Kapu community. Meanwhile, the Kapu movement leaders are keenly observing the proceedings. Speaking to the Deccan Chronicle, Kapu Corporation chairman Chalamalasetty Ramanujeya said, "On Monday, Kapu community associations and organisations are going to request the Chief Minister for reservations. The government is also positive towards this and I am sure, they will start procedures at the earliest to provide reservations.”

A Kapu JAC leader also said, "We are observing this keenly. Once we get the employment and education reservation we will then fight for the political reservations. In this context there is a meeting going to be held on Monday between pro-TD Kapu associations and the Chief Minister.”

The Kapu community had not emphasised on political reservations earlier. They had to ask for Presidential approval even for employment and education reservations. For this, the Assembly will have to first send the resolution to the Centre.
