Andhra govt appoints PV Sindhu as Deputy Collector

In appreciation for bringing honour to the country by winning the Silver medal at the Rio Olympics and thereby becoming the first Indian woman athlete to win a medal at Olympics, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu appointed badminton player PV Sindhu as Deputy Collector.

Her appointment order came effective on Thursday. The Andhra CM said that with her appointment, he now has been able to fulfil his promise.

After Sindhu’s win at Rio, Chandrababu Naidu had promised a Group-I post to Sindhu. For her appointment as the deputy district collector, the government had amended Andhra Pradesh (Regulation of Appointments to Public Services and Rationalisation of Staff Pattern and Pay Structure) Act, 1994, as recruitment in public service has to be made only through the APPSC, selection committee or employment exchange.

The 21-year-old shuttler has been working with Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) since 2013 and is currently an assistant manager (sports) at its Hyderabad office.

In a special felicitation ceremony, CM handed over the appointment order to Sindhu at the Secretariat.

PV Sindhu thanked the CM for his kind offer but she said that her preference would be to play badminton and that she is intending to concentrate more on the game in the future. CM wished her to win many more titles.
