As per Karnataka health minister Dr K Sudhakar, a memorial on the lines of Delhi's war memorial will be built to honour the commitment of 800 doctors who died during Covid second wave.

Speaking at the function by the department to mark National Doctors' Day, Sudhakar who himself is a medical professional said that doctors and paramedical staff who martyred themselves in the fight against Covid and left behind their families and children will be honoured through this memorial.

"We will build a memorial to pay homage to those doctors who laid down their lives due to Covid while rendering their services on our Arogya Soudha premises. I believe this is the first memorial in the country," the minister was quoted as saying.

Just like how the public comes and pays their respect towards soldiers at the War Memorial, the same will be done at memorial for doctors and paramedical staff once the structure is ready.

The minister assured that the memorial will be built in the most unique way.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called the doctors Covid warriors. We call only those soldiers martyrs who died for the nation during the fight but we are announcing today that the doctors and paramedics who died due to Covid are martyrs and we will build a memorial for them," a report quoted minister Sudhakar as saying.

Going by the minister's statement, the government may come up with the sketch of the structure in a few weeks time. Once the  structure comes, first the family members of the martyrs (doctors and paramedical staff) who died on duty and fight against the pandemic will be invited to pay their tributes.
