Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, the senior most judge of the Supreme Court after Chief Justice SA Bobde, was sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of India on Saturday. Justice Ramana will have a tenure of over sixteen months — until August 26, 2022.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from April 24, 2021,” said a Ministry of Law and Justice notification.

The oath-taking ceremony took place at 11 am in the presence of  Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Venkaiah Naidu, several other dignitaries, and most of the judges of the Supreme Court and several of them from High Courts of various states.

He is seen as a conventional judge, soft-spoken, very restrained in his speech but very vocal and clear in his judgments, a champion of constitutional rights, democratic values, and accountability.

Born into a family of agriculturists in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, Justice Ramana, has adorned many hats — from student leader working for farmers and industrial workers to journalist for a leading Telugu newspaper to a first-generation lawyer.

He was Additional Advocate General for Andhra Pradesh before being called to the State High Court Bench in 2001. Justice Ramana was the Delhi High Court Chief Justice prior to his elevation to the apex court.

During his tenure in the Supreme Court, Justice Ramana has advocated the need to implement regional languages as the language of the court to increase participation of rural litigants in the trial process. As CJI, Justice Ramana has a tenure of 16 months.

Outgoing CJI Sharad A Bobde had recommended Justice Ramana, the senior most judge of the Supreme Court, for appointment as the 48th Chief Justice of India in a letter addressed to the Ministry of Law and Justice on March 24.
