The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Saturday registered an FIR against former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh in an alleged corruption case and carried out searches at multiple locations.

"The searches are being carried out at various places," said the official on Saturday. The agency had earlier initiated a preliminary enquiry into the allegations, following a directive from the Bombay High Court. The statement of Deshmukh was earlier recorded by the probe team.

Deshmukh has been charged with Section 7 of the amended Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.

The probe agency has filed a case linked to the corruption allegations made by ex-Mumbai top cop Parambir Singh.

The investigation in the case was handed over earlier this month to the CBI by the Bombay High Court, which gave the probe agency 15 days to decide if the corruption case can be filed or not. Acting on the court orders, the CBI had registered a preliminary enquiry against Anil Deshmukh and several others on April 6.

After filing the case, the CBI is now conducting raids in four locations, including Anil Deshmukh's homes in Mumbai and Nagpur.

As alleged, some police officers had been told to collect Rs 100 crore every month from bars and restaurants in Mumbai. After the High Court ordered the CBI to carry out the preliminary enquiry, Deshmukh had resigned from the post.
