Commuters using Bengaluru's Namma Metro no longer have to wait long lines to buy tokens or top up their smartcards. The Bengaluru Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is introducing a new feature that allows passengers to purchase QR-based (quick response) tickets online via the Namma Metro application.

The QR-based tickets will be available starting next month. According to media reports, commuters must select the station from which they are travelling, their destination, and the number of passengers to purchase online tickets.

On the app, the ticket will be displayed as a QR code that can be scanned by the Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates at metro stations to access platforms. Gates at all metro stations throughout the city are also being upgraded to include a QR code scanner and traditional ticket readers.

Commuters can continue to purchase physical tickets/tokens and use plastic smartcards in conjunction with the new online system.

According to the report, smartcard users who upgrade to QR-code-based tickets will receive a 5 per cent discount. According to the report, the new online ticket purchasing method will soon be available on other digital wallet platforms besides the Namma Metro app.
