With no money for funeral, man dumps daughter's body in drain

Poverty drove this man to commit the extreme. S Pentaiah, a resident of Mailardevpally allegedly dumped his 16-year old daughter's body in the drain behind his house, unable to bear her funeral expenses, after she committed suicide. The incident happened in the first week of May.

He had already run into financial difficulties when his son Sitaram had committed suicide 2 years ago. He had to borrow Rs 50,000 for his funeral expenses. Later, he had to borrow another Rs 50,000 for the puberty ceremony of his daughter S Bhavani. Bhavani was notorious in the neighbourhood for her habit of stealing things. A few days before her death, a cell phone owner tracked her down for stealing his phone. Two days after the incident, she hanged herself on May 6. Her father, a daily labourer in Katedan, returned home from work to find her dead. Unable to bear her funeral costs, her father waited till midnight to dump her body in the drain behind the  house. 

The incident came to light when kids in the neighbourhood found something white in colour floating in the drain and started playing with it. A few elders noticed it to be a skull and immediately informed the police. On further investigation, residents of Vombay colony said that they had not seen Bhavani since the past few weeks. On questioning Pentaiah, they uncovered the incident. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Mailardevpally Sub Inspector T Nagachary said, "Even if the girl committed suicide, Police should be informed. He will be prosecuted for concealing the information. We are waiting for the autopsy report to know the exact cause of death."

Pentaiah's wife had left him five years ago and he was living with his son and daughter.
