One of the famous Ganesh statues in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad is the Khairatabad Ganesh idol and the celebration here is organised in a grand way. This idol is also famous for its jumbo laddu which is made by Suruchi Foods in Tapeswaram, East Godavari District of Andhra Pradesh.

The owner PVVS Mallikarjuna Rao alias Malli Babu sponsored this laddu free of cost every year. On the final day the ‘laddu prasadam’ is distributed by the Ganesh Utsav Committee to the thousands of devotees who come there for just a taste of it.

But this year, the giant laddu did not reach Khairatabad as was customary but found its way to Film Nagar. The reason for this being the political angle to it, as the local leaders desired to make use of local sweet-makers to make the laddu and so refused Malli Babu’s laddu.

Malli Babu explained saying, “Every year we make the laddu with great devotion and send it to Khairatabad Vinayak. The laddu has become prominent as much as the Ganesh idol. First year we sent 500 kilos laddu after which we increased its weight. We want the laddu to be distributed to the public but the local leaders hinder the distribution.

“In 2013, the laddu got spoilt in the rain and was immersed in the Hussainsagar. Last year they didn’t keep the laddu near the idol and this year the Trust asked us not to send the laddu. So we sent the laddu to the Film Nagar Ganesh.”

The laddu is prepared with 180 kilos sugar, 140 kilos ghee, 155 kilos besan flour and 25 kilos dry fruits.
