Tamil Nadu-based Village Cooking Channel on YouTube created history by becoming the first channel from South India to reach 10 million subscriptions, winning a diamond play button from the social media giant.

Unboxing the diamond in a video, the group thanked the viewers for their success.

First, when they reached 25 lakh subscribers, they won silver play butter and later gold and now they have the diamond play button too which is the trademark of YouTube.

"Today in our village, we unboxing YouTube Diamond Play Button. We proud this is the first time in south India. YouTube gives the award to creators who reach some milestone. We reach 10 Million subscribers so YouTube awards us with Diamond Play Button. We thank all the subscribers who are the reason for this great success! We also dedicate this award to all the subscribers! Thank you!," the group said in a statement.

Also, they donated Rs 10 lakh towards the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Public Relief Fund to help the state fight the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Whenever we reach a milestone, we used to offer a portion of our earnings to help the needy. Instead of helping people directly, we donated the money to the chief minister to make the state stand on its feet,” V Subramanian, one of the channel members, said.

The channel was started by cousins Subramanian, Ayannar, Tamilselvan, Muthumanickam and Murugesan and the center of attraction is their grandfather Periyathambi who was a former caterer. Initially, the youngsters in the group had decided to fly abroad to look for a job but they changed their decision as YouTube turned them into a star.

In less than four years the team from Chinna Veeramangalam, Pudukottai has created a sensation with field cooking show and then distributing the cooked food to villagers cemented their position in people's hearts.

The impact of the group was such that even Rahul Gandhi joined them in one of the episodes during the election campaign in March.
