Google Doodle honours Kannada actor Rajkumar on 88th birthday

Today, Google is celebrating the 88th birth anniversary of veteran Kannada actor Dr. Rajkumar with a special doodle. Born on 24 April, 1929 as Singanalluru Puttaswamayya Muthuraju, the veteran was popularly known by his screen name Rajkumar.

 

The doodle is in the form of a vibrant movie theatre packed with audiences as Dr. Rajkumar's caricature flashes on the big screen. The Google logo painted in blue is reflecting on the backdrop. This is a rather simple yet effective doodle, sans any animations.

 

Known to be a disciplined man, he was worked in over 200 films, and also recorded numerous songs. Dr. Rajkumar has won many awards including the country's prestigious Padma Bhushan in 1983 and also bagged the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1995 for the lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema. Besides, the list is endless with numerous State Film awards and Filmfare awards.

 

It was in 2000 that the Karnataka film industry and the nation were shocked when Dr. Rajkumar was kidnapped by the notorious sandalwood smuggler Veerappan. He was later released after being kept captive for over 100 days.

 

He married Parvathamma in 1953, and has five children. He later moved to Bangalore in 1972.  At the age of 77 years, Dr. Rajkumar died of cardiac arrest in Bangalore, Karnataka.
