SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has informed that his Starlink satellite network is on track to beam broadband Internet across the world except polar regions by August.

During his Mobile World Congress conference presentation, Musk said that Space Exploration Technologies Corporation has launched more than 1500 satellites so far and has Starlink operations in approximately a dozen countries.

In India, location-based Internet access requests threw up this message: Starlink is targeting coverage in your area in 2022. Availability is subject to regulatory approval. Orders will be fulfilled on a first-come, first-served basis."

Connections can be booked after paying a refundable deposit of $99 (Rs 7,362).

He added that SpaceX's total investment in the network would be between $5 billion and $10 billion before cash flow is positive.

On a lighter note, Elon Musk said, "We recently passed the strategically notable number of 69,420 active users."

"We are, I think, on course to have a few hundred thousand users, possibly over 500,000 users within 12 months," he added.

SpaceX aims to offer broadband internet to almost 5% of the population where fibre and wireless networks cannot be accessed.

The company is set to launch more Starlink satellites next year that will allow inter-satellite laser links to cover polar regions.

The SpaceX CEO said that he has signed two deals with telecom operators of a "major country" but did not identify it.

Starlink will provide data backhaul spines for their networks.

The network currently moves out 30 terabits of data per second.

Musk is targeting a user latency or network response time of fewer than 20 milliseconds.

Musk also discussed several additional upgrades that are underway during an update on the SpaceX business, which is worth $74 billion.

The engineers are developing a new ground terminal to stem losses. Elon Musk said the dishes customers are currently installing on rooftops cost more than $1000 to make but only sell for half of that.

Musk also reported that the company is also planning an orbital flight of its giant Starship rocket in the next few months.
