CES 2017: Here's what to expect at the biggest tech show

Every year Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kiskstarts in the first week of January and plays a big role in deciding the technology trends for 2017. While the technology show officially begins on 5 January, some announcements are already out and many others leaked. Let's take a quick look at what to expect at CES 2017.

 

Smartphones

At the CES 2017, Asus will put on display the Zenfone AR, the second Tango smartphone after the Phab2 Pro by Lenovo, that will come powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset with support for Project Tango as well as Google DayDream. Project Tango enables 3D mapping for indoors navigation.

 

 

Meanwhile Lenovo has announced AR and VR content for the Phab2 Pro. Huawei's Honor brand is likely to expand its portfolio with the alleged Honor 6X. Moreover, the Honor Magic will also be put on display at the event. LG is expected to take the wraps off its K series, and a new variant of the Stylus 3.

 

Sony will be at the CES 2017 show and is rumoured to launch two new smartphones. TCL and BlackBerry will showcase devices at the show too. While not a phone maker, but Qualcomm will be providing more details of its most powerful Snapdragon 835 at the event. It is built using Samsung's 10nm FinFET process. ZTE may announce the ZTE Blade V8 at the event.

 

 

Home automation

Amazon's Alexa-powered Echo and Google Home kept the home automation category afloat all through the year.  Now, LG is ready to bring in some competition. At the CES 2017, LG has revealed to focus on AI Technologies for home, outdoor and public spaces.

LG’s ‘Hub Robot’ has been designed for home use and will double as a smart home gateway and a personal assistant for consumers. Another robot previewed at CES 2017 will demonstrate new capabilities for tending to one’s yard and garden. LG’s robot line-up will also include models designed for commercial use in public spaces such as airports and hotels to help improve the traveller’s experience.

 

In a blogpost, Lenovo has also announced to have teamed up Amazon to offer Smart Assistant with Amazon Alexa. Lenovo Smart Assistant will come with eight 360-degree far-field microphones with noise suppression and acoustic echo cancellation – designed to pick up users’ voice commands from up to 16 feet (5 meters) away. A special Harman Kardon edition has also been designed for premium audio quality for music and home entertainment.

 

Samsung will put on display the Powerbot VR7000 Robot Vacuum at CES 2017. It will come with intelligent features such as Visionary Mapping Plus, FullView Sensor 2.0, an intelligent power control feature. The IoT-ready device can be controlled using an app. Then, there's the family Hub 2.0 fridge too. 

 

 

Virtual Reality

Qualcomm and Lionsgate have teamed up for Power Rangers VR experience that is based on the upcoming film. A demo zone is expected at CES 2017. There are no concrete details, but we may see some VR headsets on display. There is a lot of speculation around a VR announcement coming from Microsoft.

 

Laptops

At CES 2017, Dell will showcase the convertible version of its XPS 13. The 2-in-1 is smaller than the XPS 13 and comes powered by Core i7 processor, up to 16GB RAM and 1TB of SSD storage. Besides, Lenovo will be updating the ThinkPad lineup, and expect a slew of laptop announcements from the company. You can also expect announcements from Asus, HP and others.

Television

One can expect some cool announcements in the television category. LG will show off its 2017 lineup of UHD LCD TVs. The highlight will be the company's Nano Cell technology that is aimed at improving colour accuracy and viewing angles. Panasonic is also expected to introduce its 2017 lineup at CES 2017. You can expect 4K TV announcements from Samsung too.
