Apple is rolling out 'App Tracking Transparency' feature: Here's what you need to know
Tracking data from apps on smartphones is no secret anymore. It may be good for business, but it fails to keep users' privacy.
Apple had announced its new feature last year in June, and now they are rolling out the new feature with iOS 14.5. The feature is called App Tracking Transparency. But then why it is controversial? Facebook and Apple don't really see each other eye to eye. According to Apple, this feature has been designed for iPhone users to track data from their preferred apps.Â
So what really App Tracking Transparency does?
Apple designed a feature that will give power to users to control their data before it gets tracked by online advertisers. There will be an option asking whether the user wants to share or not any data with the apps. It's the user who decides, not the developer.
How does it work?
App Tracking Transparency is a feature that makes sure apps take permission from the users before sharing any data to other websites. Does it help in any way? In case a user doesn't allow tracking an app for data, Apple disables the app through the Apple device identifier.Â
Why Facebook doesn't support this feature?
Do you know what is IDFA? Identifiers for Advertisers track your device and data across all services and websites. This like a business model, and Facebook and other apps rely on it. So, if iPhone users don't allow this feature to track their apps, it will hurt app developers, which is why Facebook is so against it.
Apple CEO Tim Cook said, "We believe users should have the choice over the data that is being collected about them and how it's used. Facebook can continue to track users across apps and websites as before; App Tracking Transparency in iOS 14 will just require that they ask for your permission first."
