Chief Minister E.Palaniswami said, “Tamil Nadu would implement the verdict of the court on cattle sale”.  He made this comment, when the opposition party leader M.K Stalin demanded CM’s attention on this issue.

In its reply, the Chief Minister said, “In Tamil Nadu, Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act has been in existence for the past 40 years. Under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate, the central government has issued new notifications for the amended Prevention of Cow Slaughter Act, 1960. Following this, Tamil Nadu would implement the verdict of the court on cattle sale”.

The rules, laid out by SC, are as follows:

  • Cow, Ox, Buffalo, Calf, and Camel have been banned from slaughter
  • The cows that are bought from the markets should not be slaughtered
  • Once bought, cattle can exchange hands only after six months
  • The cattle markets must not function within 25 kms of state border proximities.
  • Ritual slaughter of cow is also banned.

The Madurai High Court has stayed the new rules, banning the sale of cattle in animal markets. The division bench had ordered that the rules should not be implemented for four weeks.

A case on the same lines has been filed by a common man, Abdul Rahim Qureshi, in Hyderabad High Court. The case is scheduled to be heard on July 11.

Dr Harsh Vardhan, the Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate, has said that the implementation of these rules would be taken for reconsideration, as this new notification would make the farmers suffer in various ways.
