Tamil Nadu Elderly man immolates self after losing Rs 11 lakh in job fraud

In a shocking incident in Namakkal, an elderly man attempted self-immolation in front of an AIADMK functionary after the latter took Rs 11 lakh from him in exchange for a government job for his nephew. The functionary, however, refused to pay up the money when he did not manage to find him a job and instead issued a fake appointment letter.

55-year-old Thanjaraj, running a bicycle service shop at the premises of the functionary in Pallipalayam, was trying to find a job for his nephew Siddharthan. He approached the functionary Kalyani who boasted of close relations with a state minister and promised him of a job in exchange of Rs 11 lakh. The money was paid six months ago. Meanwhile, a few days ago, Kalyani issued an appointment letter for Siddharthan to join in a government post, but Thanjaraj was shocked to find that the order was fake.

Following this, he confronted Kalyani and asked him to pay up the money. Kalyani, in turn, promised him to return the money on Saturday. Thanjaraj was in for a shock yet again when Kalyani refused to pay up the money the next time they met. After a failed argument, Thangaraj bought some kerosene from his shop and doused himself with it and set fire to himself in front of Kalyani's house. Neighbours rushed to the spot to rescue the man and doused the fire. They then shifted him to the Erode Government hospital with severe burn injuries.

The Pallipalayam Police registered a case and have begun investigations. According to an article by Deccan Chronicle, Kalyani has allegedly cheated many people in the region in such a manner. He is said to be absconding now and a man hunt has been launched by the police.
