Russian tourist resorts to begging outside Tamil Nadu temple, is assured help from Sushma Swaraj

FollowDesperate times calls for desperate measures. A Russian youth who is touring Tamil Nadu was seen begging outside a temple on Tuesday, October 10.
The police later revealed that the 24-year-old man failed to draw money using his bank ATM card as the PIN number got locked.
The man, who is identified as Evangelin, came to India on September 24 and to the Kumarakottam Sri Subramanya Swami temple on Tuesday. After visiting a few other temples he realised that his ATM card was locked out. Utterly disappointed, he sat at the entrance with his backpack and sought alms using his cap.
Several devotees gave him money, but were surprised to see a foreigner begging for alms. They alerted the police, after which he was taken to a police station where they checked his travel documents.
Siva Kanchi police personnel found his travel documents to be in order with a valid visa till next month. Police said they gave him some money and advised him to go to Chennai and contact Russian Consulate officials to get help.
The plight of the Russian tourist reached External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj who promised to help the Russian.
