Parents of minor rape victim commit suicide girl sent to government home

In a horrifying incident at the Tirupur bus stand, a couple committed suicide in front of their daughter by drinking poison-laced soft drinks. Police said that the man and his wife reached the bus stand on Saturday night when they bought the soft drinks, but did not give it to their daughter.

Within minutes, the couple started frothing from their mouth and collapsed. They were rushed to the government hospital where they were declared dead. Police rescued the girl and handed her to a government-approved home for children. According to police investigation, the man worked as a driver in Chennai and his wife and five children lived in Puducherry. Further inquiries suggested that their 15-year-old daughter was admitted at JIPMER for some health complication and it was discovered that she was pregnant with twins.

Her mother decided to abort the foetus, which was done. However, JIPMER authorities alerted the Child Welfare Committee that a minor girl had undergone an abortion. The committee started probing the case, but were left clueless by the girl's changing statements. Once she held her cousin responsible for the pregnancy, then at other times she held one of her friends responsible for the same.

The committee shifted the girl to a home and lodged a complaint with the D Nagar police, who registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012 against her friend and began investigations. The girl was further subjected to medical examination, which proved rape and her statements were recorded in front of the magistrate.

Meanwhile, the girl's parents sought her custody, which they were given. By this time, her aunt had lodged a complaint with the D Nagar police station about the missing parents and the girl. The police began a search operation, only to be informed by their counterparts in Tirupur that the couple had committed suicide.
