BJP leader meets Rajinikanth, is Thalaiva joining the party?

The BJP Yuva Morcha's National President and MP Poonam Mahajan met superstar Rajinikanth in Chennai on Sunday evening, August 6. The meeting sparked rumours of Rajinikanth hinting at joining the BJP. However, the BJP clarified that the meeting was ‘not political’ in nature.

Ms Mahajan, a parliamentarian from Mumbai, called on Rajinikanth at his Poes Garden home in Chennai, where the veteran's wife was also present.

Sources said Ms Mahajan would work with Mrs Rajinikanth on an education project as part of the "Global Citizen" initiative. They also pointed out that her father Pramod Mahajan, a former union minister killed in 2006, was also a good friend of the actor.

Rumours about 67-year-old Rajinikanth joining or launching his own party have been doing the rounds since late last year after Tamil Nadu's politics plunged into a major crisis following the death of J Jayalalithaa and the subsequent succession battle within the ruling AIADMK.

While interacting with fans in May Rajinikanth had said, “They ask me why I want to correct things when there are leaders. But to change the corrupt system and rotten democracy in the state, we all have to work together.” He had also asked his fans to be ‘ready for war’ when the time was right.

While few speculated that the actor might form his party, there were also rumours that he might join the BJP. BJP national president Amit Shah had said Rajinikanth was welcome to join the party. 

It is also speculated that fellow actor Kamal Haasan will also join politics.
