Why did Sergio Aguero turn down chance to wear Lionel Messi's number 10 shirt at Barcelona?
Lionel Messi has moved to Paris Saint-Germain, ending his 21-year-long stint with Barcelona. Meanwhile, Sergio Aguero was offered the chance to wear Messi's number ten shirt at Camp Nou, but he turned it down.
Argentine superstar Lionel Messi is no longer associated with Barcelona, ending his 21-year-long career with the Catalan. He has moved to the French capital Paris and is currently signed to Paris Saint-Germain.
As a result, with Messi leaving the club, his number ten jersey was left vacant. While calls were made to retire the jersey, the club decided against doing it and intended on carrying out the legacy associated with the shirt.
Meanwhile, the club's new signing and Messi's Argentine teammate Sergio Aguero was offered the chance to don the shirt. However, he turned it down.
Speaking on the same during a Twitch streaming session with Ibai Llanos, Aguero clarified on the same. He stated that although he wanted to wear the same, he turned it down out of respect for Messi.
Aguero left Manchester City on a free transfer and joined Barca in the hope of teaming up with his Argentine teammate. However, just weeks after, Messi left the club for PSG, as the newly-implemented financial structure by La Liga made it impossible for Barca to afford Messi, while the club's current debt made it no good.
Meanwhile, Aguero is yet to make his debut for the Catalan, having been ruled out due to an injury. However, he is expected to be back in action by next month.
In contrast, Barca has handed the number ten jersey to the club's teenage prospect Ansu Fati. While he had initially donned the number 22 and 17 shirts in the past two seasons, he would be inspired to wear the legendary jersey, which was also worn by other club legends, like Rivaldo and Ronaldinho.
