As per reports, Umesh, Assistant Sub Inspector of Tumkur Rural Police Station, raped a 32-year-old mentally disabled woman. The victim is a resident of Nrupatunga Nagar. The mother of the victim has filed a complaint in the Tumkur women’s police station.

Allegedly, Umesh saw the woman standing near the Antarasanahalli Bypass Bridge on Saturday night and asked her about her whereabouts. When he came to know that she was mentally disabled, he offered her a lift to her house in the police jeep.

As per her mother's report, he started assaulting her as soon as she boarded on jeep. When she resisted and started screaming he gagged her.

At around 3.30 am, he made a call to the victim's brother Manjunath and asked him to collect her. He got Manjunath’s mobile number from the victim. When Manjunath took some time to come, Umesh stopped waiting for and dropped the victim to her door step in his jeep.

The victim continued to scream as soon as she got down from the jeep, alerting her mother about the crime. The next morning, on Sunday, the victim’s mother filed a complaint in the Women’s police station.

The mother of the victim, in her statement, has said that her daughter used to frequently step outside their home to sit outside.

“But this time we did not know that she went away from the house and was standing near Antarasanahalli Bypass Bridge”.

The victim has been admitted to the district hospital and Isha Panth, SP of Tumkur district, is investigating the case along with Manjunath, Additional SP and Chidananda Swamy, the DySP.

The police have filed FIR on the basis of the statement given by victim’s mother. IGP of the central zone has also visited the place.

The SP, Isha Panth, denied that the rape took place in the police jeep. She agreed that Umesh, the accused, was on duty at the time, but said the crime occurred in a borrowed private vehicle. Whether someone else was present, or driving, the vehicle during the crime is yet to be ascertained.

Currently, Umesh has been suspended and is in judicial custody.

“ASI Umesh has raped a mentally disabled woman, he should be dismissed from the service. I’ll go and meet the victim on Monday,” Nagalakshmi Bai, Chairperson, Karnataka State Commission for Women told the media.
