Man brutally beaten to death in Kannur

In a suspected case of lynching, a man was beaten to death in  Vayad near Thiruvatoor in Kannur. The half-naked body was found lying on the roadside near Pariyaram.

The deceased has been identified as Khader, 38, a native of Bakkalam. The hands and legs of the body were tied and there were several bruises and injuries on the body of the deceased.

Khader is an accused in several theft cases, and it is believed that locals manhandled the man after catching him red-handed.

Local people found Khader on the roadside in a critical condition in the morning and informed the police. However, he died before cops arrived. The officials said the man was accused in several cases including theft, giving false information to Fire and Rescue Services and vandalising buses parked on road side at night.

The lynching could have taken place somewhere else, and the persons might have dumped him on the road side near Pariyaram. Khader had damaged a bus recently, and police suspect that this might have provoked someone to manhandle him.

However, police have not yet identified anyone person behind the incident and has not ruled out the possibility of any political link to the crime.

Kannur had been witnessing a spike in political violence for some time.
