Acid attacks make for horrifying news, but most incidents we hear about involve girls being targeted. On January 16, the roles were reversed as a 26-year-old Bengaluru woman hurled acid at her former lover and slashed his face with a surgical knife for not marrying her.

Lidia was a postgraduate nurse working at Vikram Hospital. Five years ago, Jayakumar (32), a resident of Srirampuram, was admitted in the same hospital for a minor ailment. During his hospitalisation, Lidia and Jayakumar fell in love and their families also consented to the relationship. However, Lidia reportedly demanded that Jayakumar convert to her religion, which he refused. This caused tension between them.

Recently, Jayakumar also refused to marry Lidia, infuriating her. Police claimed that this rejection prompted her to plot to attack him with acid. Dressed in a black dress and accompanied by her cousin Sunil, Lidia followed Jayakumar when he was returning home from the Rajarajeshwari Temple with his friend Padmanabha on the evening of January 16. Lidia and Sunil followed the car Jayakumar was travelling in on a two-wheeler.

When the vehicles reached near Vijayanagar Pipeline Road, Lidia managed to overtake the car and threw acid at Jayakumar, who was driving. Jayakumar stopped his car and started to scream in pain. Lidia then slashed at Jayakumar’s face with a surgical knife, inflicting a 13-inch wound on his cheek. Padmanabha managed to drive Jayakumar away to a hospital in the same car. He is currently being treated at a hospital at Vishveshwarapuram; Jayakumar is in the ICU with neck burns.

Vijayanagar Police went to Lidia’s house and arrested her on January 17; currently, Sunil is absconding. A case has been filed against Lidia under sections 326A, 307 and 341 of the IPC. If convicted, she faces the possibility of life imprisonment. Police suspect that she could have gotten a surgical knife from the hospital she worked at. Police are investigating how she obtained the acid.
