IT dept stumped Janardhana Reddys 500crore wedding may be legal

It was estimated that Janardhana Reddy had spent around ₹550 crore for his daughter’s marriage from November 9 to 11, 2016. Several media organisations raised a massive outcry against the wedding, with demonetisation only adding fuel to the fire.

Reddy had created a replica of Vijayanagar Empire in the Palace Grounds for hius daughter's marriage. Just a few days before the marriage, PM Narendra Modi had demonetized high-value currency notes and had called for a war against black money. At that time, the lavish video invitation cards, luxury sets, star nights, replicas of his village and Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams had attracted the attention of the whole nation.

After the issue became a national scandal, the Income Tax Department had served a notice to him enquiring about the expenditures of the marriage. Reddy is currently under investigation for large-scale mining-related corruption in Bellari.

The IT sleuths, who were apparently assuming that a huge fine could be charged on Reddy, seem to be quite disappointed now as the marriage expenses, as per the details provided by Reddy, are just Rs 30 crore and not Rs 550 crore as rumoured.

Responding to the IT notice, Janardhana Reddy has submitted the details of his expenses to the IT Department on January 11.

The case against him for arranging a lavish marriage using black money may be closed if the details provided by him are considered genuine by the IT department.

Tubular Rivets Ltd., has paid the marriage expenses. This is a limited company owned by Aruna Lakshmi, the wife of Janardhana Reddy. The IT sleuths have also obtained the details of payment made by debit/credit cards and details of the gifts received in the marriage.

So as it may soon turn out, neither did India witness a 500-crore wedding and through the handy presence of his wife, Reddy may pass out of all scanners white as milk.
