Forget women safety, who will rescue Bengaluru police from rowdies?

The police were being called out for not protecting the women, but now in this case, a question arises – who will protect the police against rowdies? In a case that happened in the city, the police were assaulted and insulted by a rowdysheeter and the law could not defend themselves. So can we hope that they will protect us?

On January 12, Kiran Kumar, a rowdy sheeter from Chikkajala entered Basaveshwaranagar police station to inquire the address and other details of a witness in one of the cases in which he was involved. When the cops refused to divulge any details, Kiran got furious and verbally abused the police.

When the police questioned his behaviour, he pounced on the station writer Raghu and strangled him. Choked, Raghu blacked out. Inspector Kallappa Karanth and Sub Inspector  Govindraj tried to stop the scuffle and were pushed away by Kiran. The man even had the guts to threaten them with suspension and get them stripped of their uniform.

"Kiran had assaulted an advocate in Chikkajala in Yelahanka. It was over some property dispute  and because there were differences, he assaulted the advocate. The advocate, a resident of Basaveshwaranagar had complained at the Chikkajala Station. Kiran wanted to know who the witnesses were in the assault case against him and so demanded these details. When our writer denied, he created a scene in the station. A case under section 353, (preventing government official from doing his duty) was registered against him and he has been sent to jail," said Veerash, the senior station writer.

If such a case happens in the fortress-like police station in front of officers with weapons, it is highly possible that such situations can soon be seen on the streets. Powerful goondas and rowdies do not bother about the repercussions and are willing to take on the law, like Kiran did. Reportage of more incidents like this will make it difficult for the police to even do their job out of fear for their lives and even people will question the strength and capability of the police.
