  • Vinuta was married off by her parents and that too against her wishes
  • Resentment at being forced into an unwanted marriage can often translate into something more violent
Forced marriage results in woman and lover plotting husbands brutal murder

20-year-old Vinuta was fresh out of the Bhairaveshwara School in Mysore and along with plans for the future, she also had decided upon who she would want to settle down with for the rest of her life.  Her classmate Shashi Kumar and she had fallen in love and intended on marrying each other as well.

Five years later, now Vinuta has a daughter with another man but their relationship was a tension-filled one. Things turned sour so badly that it has now ended in Vinuta and Shashi Kumar being charged for the brutal murder of her husband, on January 9, 2017.

It all started when the lovers made their intentions known to their parents. Then came the proverbial twist in the tale. Vinuta’s choice was disregarded by her parents and fearing that she would take some hasty decision, got her married off to 31-year-old Vardaraju, a photographer who also doubled up as a Herbal Life Agent.

Vinuta along with Shashi Kumar had even revealed their fondness for each other to Vardaraju. Unfortunately, for Vinuta, Vardaraju refused to back out from the wedding.

All this tragedy could have prevented had Vinuta’s parents not forced an unhappy marriage on her, had Vardaraju knowing the truth refused to marry Vinuta and if the lovers had not given into greed and hatched this deadly plan. But things were not to be so.

After marriage the couple started quarrelling regarding Shashi Kumar. Varadaraju was repeatedly nagging his wife and questioning her faithfulness and chastity. This enraged her to no end. A chance encounter with Shashi Kumar led the two to re- establish connections and they exchanged numbers with the promise of keeping in touch. Now encouraged by Shashi Kumar’s presence in her life, Vinuta decided to take matters into her own hands. She went to the extent of hiring a man (supari) to murder her husband.

Shashi Kumar introduced Vinuta to Raghu and she gave him ₹1.5 lakh as ‘supari’ to kill her husband. On January 7, Vinuta  introduced Raghu to Vardraraju on the pretext of getting him an agency for Herbal Life and she went away from the house saying she had some marketing to do. Sensing the coast was clear, Shashi Kumar and three others strangled Varadaraju and sliced his throat and left the place. The whole plan was finished within a few minutes.

The police have arrested Vinuta (25), resident of Bagalagunte, Shashikumar (25) resident of Mysuru, Vikas (22) and K Raghu (21) residents of Pandavapura on charges of murder. Besides they have also arrested Raghu’s minor accomplice for possession of deadly weapons and a bike that was used in the murder.

The police was able to round up the accused based on evidence captured in the neighbouring house’s CCTV camera. Even Vinuta’s mobile phone records proved her constantly being in touch with Shashi Kumar.

This is not a one off case. There are many such instances where women give into parental pressure and are forced to endure an unhappy married life. The resentment then grows into murderous rage  or dislike which ends in either party dying. However, it also a case of cowardice and selfishness where spouses are hell-bent on destroying each other just because they want something more from  their life partner.
