Demonetisation: Kalolsavam organisers brace up to tackle cash crunch

FollowUntil now organisers of Kerala School Kalolsavam used to gift the prize money along with memento and certificate, but this time they are asking for bank details. They are bracing up for a possible currency crunch that is likely to arise after demonetisation.
To tackle the issue, Kalolsavam organisers have adopted a raft of measures from bank transfers to card swiping facility. For the first time in the history of state school Kalolsavam, the prize money of winning contestants and payment for judges will be made through bank transfers.
The week-long event, where over 12, 000 students from schools across the state will flaunt their artistic skills, is being held at Kannur from January 16 to 22. Students will participate in 232 events and of them 177 will be individual events and 55 group events. There are over 600 judges, and 850 teachers are appointed to organise the largest festival of youth in Asia. The budget is estimated at ₹2.1 crore.
"We have received only ₹25 lakh as liquid cash and need another ₹95 lakh for its smooth functioning. Lack of liquid cash is a primary concern," Director of Public Instructions K V Mohan Kumar said.
To ease any potential cash crunch, organisers has asked students to bring their bank account details and Aadhar cards. The price money will be deposited to their bank account directly. Earlier, cash prizes were awarded to students on the stage as the results were announced.
They have also facilitated card swiping machines for contestants who want to file an appeal. Each appeal costs ₹5, 000 and the amount can be transferred by swiping debit or credit cards.
The week-long gala will come to a close on January 22.
