One will have to pay a security deposit of ₹ 3,000 in order to rent a cycle.  It has been started on a small scale as the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) kept 10 bicycles in Ekkatuthangal station.

However, if one wants to rent a cycle, they will have to pay a security deposit of ₹ 3,000. “They don’t have to pay a daily fee. We want to persuade commuters to use this facility to go from the station to their destination and back. This will be helpful especially for regular commuters,” a CMRL official said.

If this idea works, CMRL would want to place more cycles in the other stations as well. A tender for 10 more bikes have already been put out.

And quite obviously the commuters, who would want to avail these rented cycles to reach their destination from the stations, are not really happy with the fact that they will have shell out ₹ 3,000 as a deposit.

Bengaluru and Delhi already have similar models. While Delhi has continued with it but Bengaluru could not. Instead the latter has come up with Metro Bikes which can be rented on hourly basis.
