Demand for Karnataka coffee has increased due to famine in Brazil and excess rains in Vietnam. Also the decrease in the production has contributed for the price hike.

For the first time in 20 years, price of Robusta coffee has increased considerably. The yield in the state has decreased to 25% due to the shortage of rain between June and November, last year. Usually, the rates of Robusta coffee were between ₹2200 to ₹3200 per 50 Kgs. But now the rates have considerably risen to ₹ 4200 per 50 Kgs.

Since the planters spend a huge amount of money on labour this hike in the price, in spite of the shortage of rains, has made them happy. The coffee board has further predicted that the prices are going to rise further in the coming months.

“The harvest of coffee is decreased in Vietnam and Brazil due to bad weather condition. 60 thousand metric tonnes of the yield is decreased in the state. Consequently, the demand is increased” – BS Jayaram, Karnataka Growers’ Federation.
