Beware online fraudsters thrive under cashless campaign

After an international ring hacked into the ATM networks in Kerala in August last year, online fraudsters have struck debit card users in Kerala once again, this time under cover of digital transactions. They are now taking advantage of the public ignorance of cashless transactions.

Three Keralites lost Rs.1.5 lakh the other day after they shared debit card details to a fake caller who introduced himself as a bank employee and offering them to renew their ATM card so as to make it ready for cashless payments. The victims of the fraud shared the CVV number and the one-time password unaware of the fact that they were being duped.

The fraudsters used the OTP to transfer money from the accounts of their victims. Kareem and George Kutty, both from Thiruvananthapuram lost 80,000 and 19,000 respectively while Kamalolbhavan from Kollam was duped Rs.25,000. All the victims have accounts in the SBT branch at Madathara, and they realised that they had lost money only when they contacted the bank the other day.  Even though the three victims had ATM cards for long, they had never used it. The online robbers exploited their ignorance and duped money.

The police and cyber cell have started an investigation into the complaints.
