Council member Dr Ramabhadran told 'Asianet News' that a majority of its members had objected to the appointment of Anju to the council. She replaced Padmini Thomas, just months before its tenure was about to end. Almost 75% of the members of the council was against the decision, he said.

Padmini Thomas went against the interests of the United Democratic Front (UDF) government. Hence, the council secretary Binu George Varghese proposed the name of the Olympian to the post just six months back. Sports Council needed a full-timer as president. Anju, who was staying at Bengaluru, will not be able to fulfill the duties, the members thought, Ramachandran said.

Countering the allegation, Dasan said that the lottery was a success and all the money gained through the initiative was remitted to the government.
