How Can I Generate an E-Way Bill Online?

As per Section 60 of the GST Act, an e-way bill must be generated if the value of transported goods is more than Rs. 50,000. The generation process is 100% digital and can be performed online using the EWB web portal - www.ewaybillgst.gov.in 

This generated e-way bill is proof that the goods are getting transported legally. Also, the physical copy of the bill must be carried by the transporter as it can be verified at the checkpoints.

Generate e-way bills online in 8 easy steps

To generate an e-way bill, you can follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Log in to the e-way bill online portal

  • Open the e-way bill portal- www.ewaybillgst.gov.in 
  • Enter your username, password, and the CAPTCHA code provided on the login screen.
  • Click the ‘Login’ button to access your account.

 

Step 2: Access the 'Generate New' option

  • Once logged in, look at the left-hand side of the dashboard.
  • Click on the ‘Generate New’ option under the ‘e-Waybill’ section.

 

Step 3: Fill in the required details

Transaction type

  • Outward: Select this option if you are the supplier of goods.
  • Inward: Select this option if you are receiving the goods.

Sub-type

  • If you select Outward, the sub-types will include options like:

Supply
Export
Job Work
SKD/ CKD (Semi Knocked Down/Complete Knocked Down condition), etc.

  • If you select Inward, the sub-types will include:

Import
Job work returns
Sales return
For own use, etc.

Step 4: Add document information

  • Document type: Choose between Invoice, Challan, Bill, Credit Note, or others.
  • Document number: Enter the number of the document or invoice.
  • Document date: Provide the date of the invoice or document (please note that future dates are not allowed).

Step 5: Fill 'From/To' Section

  • Depending on whether you are a supplier or recipient, provide the required details in the 'To' or 'From' section.
  • For unregistered parties, type ‘URP’ in the GSTIN field. This code represents 'Unregistered Person.'

Step 6: Provide item details

  • Enter the details of the goods:

Product name
Description of goods
HSN code
Quantity
Number of units
Taxable value
Tax rates for CGST, SGST, or IGST.
Cess rate (if applicable)

Important note: The e-way bill system is integrated with the GST portal. Due to such integration, the system automatically populates details into GST returns. This prevents you from entering details twice and ensures correctness of data. Be aware that accurate GST returns are an important factor when obtaining loans from banks or NBFCs.

Step 7: Provide transporter details

  • Enter the mode of transportation and the approximate distance in kilometres.
  • Provide either:

Transporter Name, ID, Document Number, and Date
or
Vehicle number in the specified format

Additional tip: For easy access, it is recommended that you save frequently used clients, suppliers, and transporters in the 'My Masters' section. This feature saves time and is especially helpful for high-frequency sellers active on online marketplaces. 

Step 8: Submit the details

  • Click the ‘Submit’ button after filling in all the required information.
  • The system will validate your entries and notify you of any errors.
  • If there are no errors, the e-way bill (Form EWB-01) will be generated with a unique 12-digit number.

Easily print or reprint your e-way bill online

As per the current rules, the transporter of goods must carry a printout of a valid e-way bill. To easily print or reprint the e-way bill, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open the ‘Print EWB’ option

  • Log in to the e-Way Bill system.
  • Look for the ‘e-Waybill’ section on the left side of the dashboard.
  • Click on the ‘Print EWB’ sub-option under this menu.

 

Step 2: Enter the e-way bill number (EBN)

  • On the next screen, you will see a field to input the 12-digit e-way bill number.
  • Enter the exact e-way bill number you want to print.
  • After entering the number, click on the ‘Go’ button to proceed.

 

Step 3: Select the print option

  • Once the system retrieves the e-way bill details, the document will appear on the screen.
  • Here you will have two print options:

‘Print’: For a standard print of the e-way bill.
‘Detailed Print’: For a more detailed version of the e-way bill

  • Choose the option that suits your needs and click the button to print the document.
