Hockey India organises coaching session for journalists amid lockdown
Amid the nationwide lockdown due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Hockey India (HI) hosted an online coaching session for journalists
FollowNew Delhi: Hockey India (HI) organised the Hockey India Coaching Education Pathway Session for a group of journalists through Google Meet on Saturday (May 16).
A total of 11 journalists attended the event to get an idea about how Indian coaches better themselves through HI’s coaching education pathway and understand the coaching system being adopted in India from grassroots level and upwards.

The sport’s governing body in India launched their ambitious Hockey India Coaching Education Pathway in March 2019 with a vision to develop coaches from the grassroots and enable them to meet the requirements in the ever-growing demands of International hockey.

The interactive four-hour long session saw various topics like coaching basic skills, role of grass-root coaches, prerequisites of a good coach, basic hockey skills as well as advanced skills, as well as modern hockey terminologies were covered. The session also involved deeper-level, engaging conversations on principles of hockey that needs to be adapted at the grass-root level in order to see global success in men and women’s hockey in the coming years.
Over 500 aspiring coaches across the country have been benefited from the coaching education pathway over the course of one year with over 250 coaches achieving a minimum of Hockey India level '1' coach certification.
The programme aims to provide certification to those candidates who are already coaches or wish to pursue coaching as a career option. This simplified education structure will provide certification to develop coaches from grassroots through to the high performance/international level. The programme consists of a combination of web-based modules and face-to-face interactive courses, underpinned by a competency-based assessment process.
Those candidates who successfully complete the HI’s basic level, level '1' and level '2' coaching courses are eligible to enroll for the FIH Academy level courses.
The High Performance Director of HI David John, who presented the coaching education pathway session, expressed that he enjoyed looking at hockey through the journalists' eyes.
“Working in close quarters with the Indian Hockey Teams, we have developed a certain view about how hockey is played around the world. However, it was great to know about how journalists look at the game from the outside through the Hockey India Coaching Education Pathway Session. It was interesting to face certain questions from them that reflected their passion for the sport. Through this session, I hope the journalists were able to understand what we at Hockey India wish to achieve through these courses for the Indian coaches,” said John.
HI president Mohd. Mushtaque Ahmad was ecstatic about the fact that the journalists got a first-hand experience of the programme.
“The media has played a huge role in the growth of hockey for many years. It was brilliant to know that a group of journalists gained first-hand experience of the Hockey India Coaching Education Pathway Session.
“I am sure the Coaching Education Pathway Session will help the journalists become much better observers of the game. All in all, it was absolutely brilliant to provide a platform for journalists wherein they could get an insight into how Indian coaches have developed through the Hockey India Coaching Education Pathway,” said Ahmad.
