After Saudi ban, Qatar to carry out biggest bovine airlift; to fly in 4000 cows

It just could be the biggest bovine airlift in the history of airlifts. A Qatari businessman is in process of flying in a batch of 4,000 cows to jump start a mass diary farm in the country.

Till last week, Qatar was depended on Saudi Arabia for its milk requirements but since the embargo, the country is on the brink of a food crisis. A Qatari businessman, Moutaz Al Khayyat, has now decided to take on the Saudis by ensuring that the country does not fall into a food crisis. Al Khayyat now wants to start the country's largest dairy farm and for this, he is importing cows from Australia and US.

According to Bloomberg, Al Khayyat is going to shell out $8 million on the project. He is already building a diary farm 50km north of Doha, which is as big as 70 soccer fields.

It will take as many as 60 flights for Qatar Airways to deliver the 590-kilogram beasts that Moutaz Al Khayyat, chairman of Power International Holding, bought in Australia and the U.S. “This is the time to work for Qatar,” he said.

The plan was initially to start the diary farm by September, however, now after the embargo, Al Khayyat wants to start the project by June-end and have the supplies on by July.

Currently, the food items to Qatar is being supplied by Turkey and Iran but the scarcity is growing. Qatar is a rich country, but it is heavily depended on food imports. The essential supplies to the energy-rich state primarily used to come by trucks from Saudi Arabia and since last week it has all come to a standstill.
