Kerala police have arrested four youths for allegedly manhandling two sisters and abetting the suicide attempt by one of them. The arrested had allegedly tried to outrage the modesty of the women for resisting harassment at a restaurant on Independence Day. 

The youth also uploaded the picture's of the women on Facebook along with derogatory comments. The elder girl tried to commit suicide by consuming sleeping pills in excessive quantity, on August 21. 

The arrested are identified as Ravas, 22, Ajas, 22, Navas, 20 and Aleem Thaha, all natives of Edava. They were the neighbours of the victims' and were often engaged in eve-teasing. 

The accused persons were in a drunken state on the day of the incident which took place at a restaurant on Papanasam beach in Varkala. The girls questioned the youth were ousted from the restaurant.

This led to a quarrel as the women stepped out of the restaurant and accused tore the saree of the elder woman, threw their mobile phones off the cliff and took their photographs. 

The girls then filed a police complaint but the family of one of the accused Safan, 21, tried to settle the matter with the family of girls as he had to go to Gulf country. After reaching his destination, Safan started posting the pictures of the sisters on social media along with lewd comments. He also mentioned that the sisters also asked for ₹5 lakh for withdrawing the police complaint. 

Following this, the elder woman attempted suicide and was admitted to a hospital. Later, police arrested four youths based on the complaint filed by the women.
