Who is Kevin and why was he killed? Hartal in Kottayam on May 29?

The murder of a man from Kottayam has pointed fingers at the inaction of the police who refused to file a complaint on victim Kevin's girlfriend's request. Now, Kevin is dead and his family has alleged that even police has a role to play in this. Kevin was abducted on Saturday morning, and police started the search that evening.

The UDF and the BJP called for a hartal in Kottayam on May 29   from 6 am to 6 pm in protest against Kevin's murder. The essentials and emergency services will be excluded from the bandh.

Neena, a woman in Pathanapuram and Kevin native of Kumaranalloor, were in a relationship for the past three years. Neena's parents were forcing her to get married to someone else and were against her relationship with Kevin. It is said that Neena eloped with Kevin and the couple got married. But after the wedding, the couple had to stay separately because Neena's parents were sure of creating problems if the news broke. Later, Kevin put Neena in a hostel, and he shifted to his cousin Aneesh's house.

Nina's brother and a team reached Kevin's house and started a fight on Saturday morning at 3. When Neena's family went to Aneesh's house to take Neena with them, they did not find her there. Thus they kidnapped Kevin. Within a short time after the incident, Kevin's relatives filed a missing complaint with the Gandhinagar police.

Aneesh, cousin of Kevin who was beaten up by Neena's family also filed a complaint in the Gandhinagar police station. In fact, Neena, who lived in a hostel, also filed a complaint that her husband had gone missing. However, police did not take of the complaints seriously and did not start a search.

Kevin's relatives allege that Gandhinagar SI Shibu had delayed the inquiry by saying that the police were busy with the duty to provide security to the Chief Minister, who was visiting Kottayam. An FIR was lodged by the police at 11 am, but no action was taken by the police.

Later that evening, when the news of police inaction to search for Kevin broke, media surrounded the police station and people even blocked the road outside the station. It was then that the Punalur DySP reached the Gandhinagar station and started the investigation.

Police found that Kevin was kidnapped and taken to Thenmala. The owner of the car was arrested. Another accused named Vishal was also arrested with the car owner on that night. But Vishal said Kevin had escaped from their clutches.

Later police sent out a team to search for Kevin in Punalur Thenmala part at night. But the police found Kevin's body in the Chaliyakekara River on Monday morning. The report submitted by the Punalur DySP Kottayam said that it was a great let down in handling the incident by the Gandhinagar SI Shibukumar. The DySP's report states that the Gandhinagar police did not take the time to follow or find him personally.

Twelve people whom police caught in the Kevin kidnapping case are said to be the DYFI members. Two more accused including Neena's brother is still at large. Police said that the there are possibilities of them being in Tengashi in Tamil Nadu. Two teams of police officers have been sent out to find the accused.

It is said that Kevin was brutally beaten up and was murdered. Deep wounds were found on Kevin's body and especially the neck. His eyes are also partially damaged. His wife Neena is hospitalised after hearing the shocking news.
