Clashes broke out between CPM and BJP councillors at the corporation council meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, injuring the mayor.

Corporation mayor VK Prasanth suffered injuries to his head and legs in the clash and was rushed to the Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital. He is under treatment in the ICU and his left leg has been put in a cast.

Tensions erupted during the special council meeting on Saturday after some heated exchanges between the councillors in connection with the installation of high-mast lights in the city.

Opposition leader Girikumar and his supporters reportedly manhandled the mayor, while was on his way out after the meeting. LDF councillor Rasiya Begum also suffered injuries in the scuffle.

The CPM has alleged that BJP activists from outside manhandled the mayor and indulged in violence. However, the saffron party's leadership has dismissed the allegations and insist that their workers did not attack the mayor.
