Thrissur youth commit suicide police custody family allege torture

A Thrissur youth committed suicide on Tuesday after the police took him to the station for questioning on suspicion of being part of a chain snatching gang.

Vinayak, 19, who hails from Engandiyur, was released by the police a few hours after they took him in but he was found hanging at his home the next day. His family has now alleged police torture as the reason for the teenager taking the extreme step.

The Pavaratty police picked up Vinayak and his friend Sarath for questioning on Monday while the two were talking to a girl near a busy road. The police claim that the two were asked to come to the station as they didn't have the necessary documents for the bike. They said the Vinayak's father was called to the police station later in the day and the youth left with him.

However, the teen's relatives have alleged that he committed suicide due to police torture. Sarath and the family claim the police beat up Vinayak severely and he bore several injuries, including on his private parts.

City police commissioner T Narayan IPS has asked the ASP to probe the incident and submit a report soon. Meanwhile, CPM leader and Guruvayoor MLA KV Abdul Khader has asked for a high-level probe into the incident.

Several chain snatching incidents have been reported in Thrissur in the past month. The police had intensified patrolling in mufti in the last few weeks.
