Surabhi Lakshmi explains eating beef on Onam

National Award winning actress Surabhi Lakshmi had landed in the soup after a programme was aired on a Malayalam television channel on the Thiruvonam day where she was seen eating beef. However, the actress has now come up with an explanation that it is very common in northern part of the state to have non-veg on special occasions.

She decided to respond after social media started trolling her and it became a huge issue. The actress says that little did she realise that by doing that programme she would find herself in the crosshairs of abuses and memes.

"It is very normal in northern Kerala to have chicken or beef on a festival day. The shooting of the programme was held three weeks before Onam. I myself selected the venue, a hotel in Kozhikode which I frequently visit. We chose their signature dish, beef curry and parotta. People started abusing without understanding anything," Surabhi told NDTV.

The actress says that the abuses started after she shared a photograph of her with an Onam spread, having fried chicken, on the week of Onam. Some wrote that she should celebrate her next Onam with pork while another commented that she should change her name as it doesn't suit her actions. Another said that the picture made clear the agenda of the channel and her behind eating beef.
