Three women died and at least 57 persons were injured after a footbridge, which was in the compound of the Kerala Minerals and Metals Limited (KMML) at Chavara near Kollam, collapsed on Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Shyamala Devi, Angelina and Annamma. The first victim was identified as Shyamala soon after the accident. The body of Annamma was fished out from the lake in the afternoon.

The body of KMML employee Angelina was recovered in the evening from the lake after the police failed to trace her in any of the hospitals where the injured were admitted after the accident.

The injured have been admitted to various nearby hospitals. The locals said the bridge was awaiting major repairs for a long time.

The iron footbridge across the national waterway, which connected two units of the state-owned KMML, collapsed at 10.30 am on Monday. Reports claim that at least 70 employees of KMML were on the bridge when it gave in.

The authorities are conducting a search to find if more people have gone missing in the river.
