Congress leader and Kovalam MLA M Vincent, accused of raping a woman, has stated that the public knows he is innocent and his popularity has only increased after his arrest.

Vincent, who was arrested on July 22 on charges of stalking and rape, had obtained conditional bail from Thiruvananthapuram principal sessions court on Thursday.

Speaking to mediapersons on Saturday, Vincent said that the local CPM leaders have been holding a grudge against him and framed him in the rape case as they wanted him away when the Halcyon Castle aka Kovalam Palace was handed over to the RP group.

"The CPM conspired against me and wanted to avoid block any sort of protest from me regarding the handing over of the Kovalam Palace. But the public knows I was framed. Hundreds of people, including films actors, came to see me in jail. I now have more support of the masses than before.

"The pressure exerted by the CM’s office led to my arrest. The absence of any probe into conspiracy angle is suspicious. Though I lodged a petition long ago, the police are yet to even record my statement," the Kovalam MLA pointed out.
