Recently, a newspaper cutting has been spreading in social media stating that Megastar Mammootty had been caught by airport customs while trying to smuggle a television without paying duty. However, sources close to the star had clarified that the news is fake and he was not even in Kerala when the post started spreading.

His social media manager himself made a Facebook post stating that the actor has been in Singapore for a week while the news is that he was arrested at Kochi airport.

"He is in Singapore for a week now. Then how would he get caught in Kochi? When you spread a fake news, please take care of timing as well," Abdul Manaf, the actor's social media manager wrote on his Facebook wall.

He also posted few photographs of the actor, and it shows that Mammootty is having a great time in Singapore.

The news spreading of Facebook was actually reported by The Hindu back in 2004.

According to the report in the newspaper, Mammootty had to spend some time at Kochi airport "after an error occurred in calculating the customs duty for a television that he brought with him from Dubai. He had already paid ₹10,000 but was asked to pay 40% of the price towards customs duty. As he did not have cash in hand, the actor had to spend time at the airport, but no offence was registered in his name.
