In a rare gesture of communal harmony, a temple in Malappuram, the Muslim-dominated district in Kerala, organised an Iftar gathering inside its premises. The party was hosted as part of the renovation works of Lakshmi Narasimha Murthy temple at Punnakkal, Vettuchira.

The temple renovation committee decided to organise the gathering with an aim to send out a strong message of brotherhood and peace to the new generation.

"Our forefathers used to live in such peace and harmony.Even those belonging to our generation had a strong bonding with our neighbours, irrespective of caste or religion. However, the youngsters don't seem to understand it. We took the initiative to make them understand and experience the value of brotherhood," a committee member said.

Over 500 persons accepted the invitation to offer prayers and break Ramzan fast on temple premises. "They had invited us happily. How could we deny it?" one of the persons who took part in the gathering said.

The items included thari kanji or Nombu kanji, the Malabar special Ramzan drink, apart from fruits, snacks and fruit juice. But, more than the sumptuous meal it was the spirit behind the gesture that caught attention.

Muslims all over the world is observing one-month fasting during the holy month of Ramadan, during which they abstain from any food or drink from dawn to dusk.
