Joy was found hanging outside the Chembanoda village office last Thursday morning after his attempts to remit tax for 80 cents of land owned by his wife were blocked by officials for one reason or the other for the past one-and-a-half years.

Sileesh and village officer KA Sunny were suspended by the collector on June 22 following a public outrage over the incident.

The police have registered a case of abetment of suicide against Sileesh.

Joy’s brothers told Asianet News that he was unable to bear the mental torture from the village office authorities. They said that Joy had to pay the land tax in order to to avail loans for various expenses, including his daughter's marriage
