A youth from Kerala, who had left the state to join the Islamic State last year, has been killed in Afghanistan, according to a message received by his family.

The youth has been identified as Marwan Ismail, 23, a resident of Trikaripur in Kasaragod. His father KVP Ismail received the message on the Telegram app on Monday that Marwan was killed in a US air strike.

The message reportedly had just one line and stated Marwan was "martyred", in a drone attack along with a few others. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has confirmed the message about his death.

Marwan's family has said he left home to join the ISIS in May 2016 as part of a 21-member group, after telling them he is going to Mumbai. He was suspected to be in Nangarhar, a province in Afghanistan partially controlled by the terrorist organisation. Around three months ago, the family received information that he married a foreign woman.

From the group which left in May 2016, four youths, identified as TK Hafeesuddin, Yahiya, Shajeer Abdullah and Mursheed, had been killed earlier. Thir deaths were also confirmed by Telegram messages.
