Kerala state Department of Public Education has issued circular directing government schools to provide breakfast and evening snacks to students from Class I to VIII. However, the government will not allow funds, but the schools have to devise means and mobilise funds for the project.

The schools are asked to collect funds from local government organisations, donors, NGO's, alumni associations and individuals.

The circular also states that pre-primary schools, formed after 2012, which are yet to get recognition will cease to receive government funds from now. School committees will have to raise funds for breakfast and tea snacks scheme from agencies, individuals and organisations.

The schools will have to form a noon feeding committee before June 15. The committees will have to ensure hygiene and take care of mandates of health cards. The cards are issued to cooks twice a year, and this is done in coordination with health centres.

Government schools in Kerala are already providing meals to students coming from financially backward condition.
