Field trip turns tragic as Keralite girl drowns at Goa beach

Two students, including a Keralite girl, from a college in Gujarat drowned at the Candolim beach in Goa on Thursday.

The deceased have been identified as Anuja Susan Paul, 22, hailing from Muvattupuzha and settled in Chennai, and Sai Jnaneswar, 23, a native of Hyderabad.

Anuja and Sai were part of a group of 47 students from the Mudra Institute of Communication in Ahmedabad, who had gone to Goa along with the faculty as part of their field trip. Six students from the group went to swim at the Candolim beach at around 3 am on Thursday. Anuja and Sai were pulled inside by strong waves.

Anuja was immediately washed ashore on the beach. She was shifted to a primary health centre in Candolim but was declared dead on arrival. Sai's body was fished out of the water a few hours later. The families of the deceased were informed and a post-mortems were conducted.

Though Anuja is originally from Muvattupuzha, her family is settled in Chennai. She is survived by her father Paul Basil, mother Sindhu Paul and sister Anjali Elizabeth Paul.

This is the third incident of drowning in last one week on Candolim-Calangute beaches which has forced the private lifeguard agency manning the beaches to issue advisory against swimming in rough water.
