The UDF will field senior Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader KNA Khader as its candidate for the bypoll to the state assembly from Vengara constituency in Malappuram.

An advocate and orator, Khader is now serving as IUML's Malappuram district secretary. IUML state president Panakkad Sayed Hyderali Shihab Thangal made the announcement on Monday. The Election Commission has scheduled the bypoll for October 11.

The IUML is the second biggest ally of the Congress-led UDF. The bypoll became necessary after sitting legislator and top IUML leader PK Kunhalikutty vacated the seat after being elected from the Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency in April.

The CPM-led LDF has named PP Basheer, who had contested against Kunhalikutty in the 2016 assembly polls and lost by a margin of 38,057 votes, as its candidate.

In this year's Lok Sabha bypoll, Kunhalikutty increased his margin from Vengara, which comes under the Malappuram Lok Sabha constituency to 40,529 votes. The Lok Sabha bypoll was caused by the demise of former Union Minister E Ahmed.

Meanwhile, the BJP is yet announce its candidate for the bypoll. The last date of filing nominations is September 22.
